Chess Set

This set was painted by Grandma and was the set that Grandpa used to teach me how to play chess. I stayed one summer with them back in 1991. He decided he was going to teach me how to play. He did and I proceeded to win about 3/4th of the time. I'll never forget his smile, a mix of pride and annoyance... mostly pride.

He gave it to me to play with Belle (and someday Moya too) when we visited in August of 2009.

  1. Grandma painted this?! I didn't know Grandma painted anything.

  2. Actually, Grandma didn't paint it. I did. I made it as a present, Christmas or birthday, for Grandpa. I'm not sure exactly when. I started doing ceramics when we lived in Salt Lake City (1976 - 1978) and continued for a while after we moved to California, but not after 1983. I rather think it would have been somewhere between 1979 - 1981. I also made a set for us.... don't know what happened to it.
Looking at the pictures, it appears to be intact. I was sure that Grandma told be that several pieces were badly broken. However she could have had them repaired, or I could have repaired them (or made new ones) myself and forgotten.

  3. A few of the pieces were broken but had been glued back together. Some have a few chips. But for the most part it is in good condition!

I'm glad to know you painted it. I was surprised when Grandpa told me Grandma had done it since I'd never known her to be into painting.

Hope you don't mind my having it now.
